1980s
The World Federation of Right to Die Societies was founded in 1980. Its membership included dozens of organizations from countries around the world that were concerned with euthanasia and a person’s right to die. The mandate of the organization is that all persons have the right to die with dignity, under their own decision as long as that death does no harm to society other than the sadness associated with it.
Also in 1980 The Hemlock Society, a grassroots euthanasia organization, was founded in Los Angeles by Derek Humphry. Mr. Humphry is known as a pioneer of the euthanasia movement and a past president of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies. The Hemlock Society saw remarkable growth under that name for 23 years but today the work continues under a new name: Final Exit.
In 1980 Pope John Paul II issued a Declaration on Euthanasia. It opposed mercy killing but permitted increased use of painkillers as well as the patient’s refusal of extraordinary means for sustaining their life. The Declaration was meant to inspire service in accordance with the plan of the Christian God. Life, understood by Christians, is a gift from God. As a gift Christians must hasten the hour of their death if possible.
