Life
Every year the Society for the Discussion of Medical Ethics chooses one topic regarding life to focus on at our annual symposium. This year the topic is Assisted Suicide. This topic has been in the media, and the courts, for decades and is showing no signs of fading away from public discussion.
Suffering has always been a part of the human condition. Since the beginning of medicine, physicians have been asked to deal with this in many different forms. One of the most debatable ways is through physician-assisted suicide. This debate argues if ending life is an acceptable way to end suffering or not.
Throughout the modern world, where this debate is heard more regularly in hospitals and in court rooms, cases are continuously presented by patients who are more often than not, denied legal assistance in the hastening of their death. Even though assisted suicide is illegal in most places throughout the world, citizens keep coming back to fight for their right to have control over their body and their death.
Here you will be able to learn about the history of assisted suicide, review case studies and read profiles of opinion leaders whose strong views have affected public discussion of the issue. At our annual symposium, SDME will bring together medical and legal professionals with those who are affected by this issue and those who just wish to learn more. Together, through intellectual discourse, the Society for the Discussion of Medical Ethics will promote a new understanding for all hoping to learn more.
